First Hybrid Closed Loop Insulin Pump
2017 marked the launch of Medtronic’s MiniMed 670G. It was a major breakthrough for all insulin pump users. With its Hybrid Closed Loop (HCL) technology, the MiniMed 670G transformed how people with diabetes manage their condition.
The MiniMed 670G is a tubed insulin pump equipped with Medtronic’s SmartGuard HCL technology and Guardian Sensor 3. The closed-loop technology of the MiniMed 670G is completely integrated into the pump device and does not require a smartphone for management.
Understanding the Hybrid Closed Loop
What made MiniMed 670G a milestone in the long history of Insulin Pumps was the capacity to automate basal/background insulin delivery. The Guardian 3 sensor is an advanced CGM capable of providing Blood Glucose reading every 5 minutes.
The Medtronic 670G provided the “Auto Mode” option, which when activated automates the delivery of basal insulin. The Pump algorithm also allows for greater efficiency by learning Blood Glucose patterns and adapting to every individual’s condition.
It was called a Hybrid Closed Loop because the MiniMed 670G still required input from the user regarding meals and bolus delivery. The MiniMed 670G with its automated basal delivery was yet another step in the direction of an automated pancreas.
Diabetes on Cruise Control
While the MiniMed 670G did not completely reduce the burdens of managing diabetes, it made life easier for many. As the Hybrid Closed Loop technology allowed for automated Basal delivery, people with diabetes had one less worry.
